Product Feature: Wheels
The very earliest automotive wheels were little more than beefed up versions of what you'd find on a bike. Spokes would lace out from a central hub to hold a tube full of air and a tire around it to provide protection and traction for the vehicle. As the needs of car owners changed, they needed more from their vehicles with every passing year. Soon the old style of tire wouldn't cut it, and neither would the wire-spoked wheel meant to hold it. As automotive technology changed, cars got faster, and roads went from being mostly dirt to smooth asphalt. It was during this time that the modern car wheel was invented.
Not only was it designed to meet the demands of the the modern car, the car wheel could be used as a piece of art as well as for utility. Steel wheels were used for their ease of manufacture and cost. They could be made to hold decorative hubcaps of many different styles and brands. If you are needing steel wheels for your vintage Mercedes, we have a few different options. We offer sandblasted and repainted original wheels for the V8 models, and we have new steel wheels for the four, five, and six cylinder models.
You might be surprised to learn that the earliest aluminum wheels were offered by Bugatti in 1924. It would take nearly 50 years for the idea to catch on, and when it did, Mercedes began to offer their iconic Bundt wheel design starting in the summer of 1969. We've got several options for the Bundts as well. We offer new wheels, original wheels that have been sandblasted and repainted, and original wheels that have been sandblasted, repainted, and powder-coated.
We also have four of the coveted aluminum steel-replacement wheels available. These were found originally on the W123 240D but are popular to install on earlier chassis due to their lightweight material.
When shopping for wheels, please keep in mind that V8 powered cars need a wider wheel than what you'd find on a four, five, or six cylinder model. Additionally if you are changing between steel or aluminum alloy wheels, you'll need to change your lug bolts. Please reach out to us before placing your order if you have any questions!
