W115 Mercedes 300D For Sale w/ OM617 Diesel Engine
THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SOLD
Vehicle History
I purchased the vehicle 3 years ago. I have service records for the vehicle up until 1984. Unfortunately, no service records were available after that time. The mileage reported at the last service in 1984 was 105,816. The 5 digit odometer reads 30,751, so I do know that this Mercedes 300D has at least 136K miles on it. I do not know much about the prior owners, other than this W115 was previously owned in Visalia, California.
When I purchased this vehicle it was running fine and in need of some restoration which I had hoped to take on as a hobby project. I no longer have time to work on the vehicle and am planning a move, hence the sale. I am hoping that there is some enthusiast who has the time, expertise, and energy to put into restoring this 300D as she is really a beauty.
Mechanical Condition
I had the radiator and air conditioner serviced shortly after I purchased the W115 and the climate control is in good working order. The engine and transmission have no known issues. I have owned the Mercedes for three years, and during the first year drove it regularly around town for short trips with no issues. The 5-cylinder OM617 engine ran good and the automatic transmission shifted well. For the last two years, the vehicle has been nonoperational while I attempted to replace the brake calipers, which are still not functional. During the first year, I had the vehicle at my home and started it regularly. For the last year, the vehicle sat idle at a mechanic's shop and was likely not started as the battery is now completely dead and in need of replacement. It will need a new battery and possibly need the diesel fuel drained and replaced before starting it again. The major issue that I know of with this Mercedes 300D is the brake calipers. I removed and attempted to rebuild the original calipers, but ran into issues with fitting the dust covers. After purchasing a new set of calipers at significant expense and finding them to not fit on the vehicle and taking it to a mechanic who ultimately turned down the job, I've decided to throw in the towel. The vehicle has new rear brake calipers, brake lines, and pads that I installed. The front calipers are in need of replacement and are currently not functional.
Body Condition
The body of the W115 Mercedes is overall in good condition. There are a couple of very small dings in the body (see photo). The window seals are sun damaged and in need of replacement. I have not appreciated a significant leak but can tell that some moisture is getting in and the seals are old. The paint on the vehicle has been heavily oxidized from the sun and it would benefit from being repainted. There a couple of very small chips in the paint on the hood of the vehicle. When I purchased the vehicle, there was some rust in the trunk from a leak in the seal. I since replaced the trunk seal, removed the rust, and repainted the trunk (see photos).
Interior Condition
The seats are in good condition with no cracks or tears. The carpets are in good condition with no significant wear or damage. The headliner is coming off in places near the rear window (see photos). The dash is overall in good condition and the vintage radio is in working order. There are some cracks in the veneer over the glove box. The driver's side door map holder fell off and is cracked. The rear window dash shows signs of water and sun damage and needs to be replaced (see photo).
Additional Notes
There is an auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk that I have never accessed. There is also a kill switch under the hood near the battery. The glow plugs have been switched from series plugs to fast pencil plugs and there is a switch mounted under the dash for the glow plugs.
